January 29, 2019 (Alliance, Ohio)

The Weather forecast is for extreme cold weather. Residents should take this time to prepare their homes for the cold weather. The cold weather advisory describes what to do be prepared.

The criteria for opening a shelter as described previously is done by the Emergency Management Agency and the Red Cross based on extensive power outages and is at their discretion.

Contingency plans when a shelter is not warranted due to an individual or small number of effected citizens the City contacts local churches and The Salvation Army that have opened their doors in the past upon request.

As in November the churches must be unaffected by the weather and gear up staffing. This is coordinated through the Fire Chief who is the Incident Commander. The Fire Chief met today with Emergency Management Director of Stark County to coordinate efforts.

Usually with a small number of individuals affected, placement with family or friends is the usual method of receiving help.

In the past, when centers have been opened very few have attended. Additionally, when warming centers are opened it is generally during the daylight hours only.

Concerns arise in these temperature extremes for those who are homeless. The Homeless Hotline for Stark County is 330-452-4363.

Additional details will be released via City website, social media, and our Civic Ready website.
